How to tackle constant anxieties, fear – Your Show Stoppers?

Woke up 3 am in one-morning sweating, completely restless. It was Malaysia. Three days back, the most profitable petrochemical downstream unit which I was heading, met an accident and caught fire. Luckily there was no fatality. Then the question was reviving back the unit. The competent technical team, coming out of the shock, presented that it will take a minimum of two years. Weeks passed by. The same team came back and reported it is possible within 9 months. Actually we brought back this devastating factory to life within 7 months and placed the product in the market within 8th months. What we noticed is the fact that the team delivered the unit in record time because we nurtured the environment in such a way that people works without any anxiety, stress and fear. The results were amazing. The focus was tremendous, the spirit was high.

When we act from a growth mindset, which is free from anxiety and fear , we achieve more individually and collectively. It is easier said than done in the majority of cases. In an age where we all are chasing deadlines to finish a task and situation demand multitasking, the fear and anxiety become multifold and constant. It becomes an addiction. The day we do not have that anxiety and fear, we miss something. The simple reason is that we have nurtured year after year the same pattern. Such undesirable emotion becomes a driving force in a way and becomes a part of our individuality. Our ego gets tucked with it. We fall in love with this evil friend. Does it mean that we can’t break such a pattern of overthinking, anxiety, fear?

Good news is that there are multiple ways and it is pretty much do-able.

WHO says 1 out 13 people are in an extreme case of anxiety disorder OCD, PTSD etc. And there are many who are not extreme cases or nor normal either. As a human being, it is completely ok to be a little anxious or being afraid before an exam, important meeting, job interview. We have an inbuilt mechanism which has enough resilience to bounce back within moments.
There are innumerable studies and research on the subject. I am just mentioning the way it has truly helped me and still helping. Here are useful 8 tips for you.

Not letting the show continue

First step is finding a little time, taking a pause to be aware that we have that anxiety, fear. Whenever you are overthinking, that’s the time to be aware that you are overthinking or anxious. If you are angry, it is even easier to be aware that you are angry, there are so many internal and external changes. Your little voice inside, will encourage you to be anxious, become angrier and will send you back to your usual mode of becoming anxious, anger, overthinking. Your saboteur will keep reminding you, look how happy you are overthinking, being fearful, anxious and keep encouraging you to act from that state of mind which you have done for so many years. Here is the catch , this is the hook to be aware. Neuroscience tells us that a tiny almond-shaped Amygdala is responsible for processing emotions and actions related to anxiety and fear. Pushes us to a sequence of Fear , freeze , flight. With our constant anxiety, anger, overthinking we are just using this small part of the brain. What a wastage! As we shift our emotions to be free of anxiety and fear we start using frontal lobe, the major discerning faculty of a human being. We start excelling. We love what we do. We develop a razor sharp focus. We go all out to win, rather do not play thinking not to lose.

Making conscious choices

Find what other options available to you from this new awareness. Our first anxiety and fear as a newborn is that of separation from our mother, how short that separation it may be. As a child whatever naughty things we do, at no time we like to go back to mother’s lap as that’s the most secured place we identify. As we become adult we do not have such places to go any more and we find a different source. When that source doesn’t work, we crumble. Our natural fear is that of falling and louder voice. Rest all types of fears and anxieties we acquire in our life journey. Rather we manufacture it which has no real relevance.

As you become conscious persistently, you will start getting more choices which help you to be less anxious, less angry, less fearful. As you repeatedly do for some time, you will find more choices are emerging. It even becomes easier when we act centring on our values, true likings and higher purpose of life.

Stop Multi-Tasking

Our most important tool named as the brain cannot handle multitasking. Women can shift from one task to another quite faster compared to men, multitasking is still a challenge. Multi-tasking generates stress and anxieties immensely. Start doing one thing at a time. Mindfulness activities can help tremendously.

Reduce Distractions

Mute your useless WhatsApp groups. Do not feel any urgency to reply or update your social media status. Find a time to address those.

Start journaling your experiences from such new actions.

Journaling is immensely powerful to make you aware, your struggle in the progress, your true evolving. Journaling helps us to get a breather from our routine and find a new perspective. It helps you to act from a new platform. It holds you responsible and accountable for your actions.

Discover new possibilities

New possibilities open up its doors in mysterious ways in this journey. Look at your closed friends, your acquaintances who went through a tough time and then doing better again. Ask them a question about their own fear and anxiety during their struggle days? What truly worked? You will find same thing even within your own life. Go through the life journeys of great men of our planet. As you discover possibilities in your own life, your growth mindset starts blooming from here. You become easier,fuller, more effective. You start feeling as if it is the first time that you are so much in control of your life.

More you practice, less will be your fear and anxiety.

In 1994 I met a car accident in Bangkok and was in full-blown PTSD. Could not drive for months. Gradually I mastered the courage after few months. Decided to drive again. Day 1, I was almost closing my eyes when a big vehicle was passing by, I was still scared to the extent to make my pant wet. The day 2 was better. The day 3 was even better. As we keep replacing with our new thought pattern, we start reducing our fear and anxiety day by day. A time will come when this new growth mindset will be part of our individuality. Learning is in doing.

Leap of Faith

If you are a believer of any faith and do little spiritual practice, your journey to overcome fear and anxiety will be much easier.The core of the spirituality is surrendering, throwing your ego outside the window, believing the fact that you are a tiny particle in this vast universe. If you become aware of your hurdles and pray, you get that extra strength.

And if you are not believer of any faith , trust yourself. Just seat in a quiet place and count your breath up to 10 and repeat it for 10 times, each time you are aware that you are overthinking, anxious or fearful. It brings awesome result.
